Katie Walker, M.S., P.E.

Project Engineer

Mrs. Walker has conducted Texas Department of Insurance Factory Mutual (FM) wind inspections in hurricane-prone regions of the United States, and she has provided ongoing construction administration services for high importance structures with FM-insured building envelopes. Her experience working in special wind regions includes projects on the Gulf Coast, in the Pacific Northwest, and in the Southwest, several of which involved special wind studies above and beyond the provisions of ASCE 7-10 and 7-16.

Mrs. Walker has performed structural assessments and retrofits on structures ranging in size from single-story residential to high rise and ranging in age from historical structures to new construction. She has analyzed and advised on large-scale structural lateral and gravity stability, as well as secondary structural attachments, in dozens of existing buildings around the US, including high seismic and high wind areas. Having performed observation and analysis of such a range of structures, she is familiar with current and historic regional construction and drafting practices across the United States, including materials such as unreinforced masonry, lightweight concrete, non-structural concrete, tilt wall construction, wood, posttensioned concrete, structural steel, cold-formed steel, and structural aluminum.

Mrs. Walker’s structural condition assessment experience includes the retrofit and repurposing of historic downtown structures; development of HCAI (OSHPD)-approved Condition Assessment and Materials Testing Programs to bring California hospitals to acceptable seismic resiliency standards; retrofit, partial demolition, and infill of midrise concrete office buildings and tilt-up wall structures; retrofitting and reinforcing of historic underground tunnels to withstand foundation loading from the adjacent building and street; and the assessment and replacement of heavy surgical operating room lights with stringent deflection criteria in hospital structures in nearly every state in the US, with a focus on assessing and improving past performance while adding flexibility for future replacements.
