Michael J. Foley, B.S., E.E.

Senior Electro-Forensic Engineering Consultant

At Knott Laboratory, Mr. Foley is a Senior Electro-Forensic Engineering Consultant for Knott Laboratory. Mr. Foley specializes in the investigation of electrical failures and product liability issues with particular emphasis on utility, industrial, commercial and residential electrical systems and code interpretation. Mr. Foley is a court-qualified expert in County, District, State and Federal courts.

Mr. Foley has investigated numerous fires suspected of having had electrical causation, he has studied utility, industrial, commercial and residential systems to determine causes of electrical power failures; analyzed electrical systems, machine components and work practices in regard to OSHA compliance issues; analyzed electrical systems and equipment in regard to lightning and other transient phenomena; analyzed computer systems in relation to equipment damage and data loss caused by power system disturbances; analyzed utility system design and safety practices in relation to power line contacts and electrocutions; tested and evaluated the maintenance of high voltage equipment; studied the coordination of fuses, relays, circuit breakers, re-closers and other protective devices for electrical power systems; analyzed roadway lighting, fire alarm and detection systems, and industrial lighting systems and engineered and supervised the design, installation and start-up of electrical power distribution and control systems.

Mr. Foley is active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and its associated organization, the Industry Applications Society (IAS). Mr. Foley is an adjunct instructor at Front Range Community College and has taught Basic Electricity in the Energy Boost Training Program. In addition to his engineering education and experience, he is a Board Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator by the National Association of Fire Investigators and a Certified Lightning Protection Professional by the National Lightning Safety Institute.
