Mr. Hurler graduated from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2016 and became a licensed Professional Engineer in 2021. He worked in the Transportation Engineering and Roadway Design industry for approximately 7 years and began working as a Forensic Engineer in 2022. In his time at Knott, his primary investigations have included those related to transportation design, premises liability, and civil engineering.

Engineering Design

Mr. Hurler has substantial experience working as a Transportation Engineer in previous roles. This involved providing technical design expertise and leading the design of numerous high-profile roadway/traffic engineering projects in numerous states and for dozens of federal, state, county, and local agencies. His expertise is in geometric design, three-dimensional modeling, and the development of design plans and detailed cost estimates. He has worked on a large variety of civil and transportation engineering projects, including but not limited to major highway projects, both existing and new construction, intersection improvements, bridge replacements, signing and striping improvements, surfacing improvements, safety, capacity, and congestion improvements, site development, hydraulics, hydrology, and drainage improvements, and ADA improvements.

Expertise in Accident Reconstruction

While at Knott Laboratory, Mr. Hurler has conducted numerous forensic engineering investigations including those related to transportation engineering, premises liability, and civil engineering. In the field of transportation design, Mr. Hurler has investigated cases related to roadway and geometric design, sight distance, vehicular, bicycle, scooter, and pedestrian collisions and accidents, signing and striping, the design of pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and more. In the field of premises liability, Mr. Hurler has investigated cases related to personal injury, trip-and-falls, slip-and-falls, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, grading and drainage, snow and ice removal and mitigation, non-compliant design and construction of infrastructure, and more. In the field of civil engineering, Mr. Hurler has investigated cases related to deficient grading and drainage, degradation, failure, and compliance of civil and ADA infrastructure, degradation and failure of asphalt and concrete pavements, stormwater system design and failure, subsurface utilities, directional drilling/boring, expansive and unsuitable soils, wall collapses, ADA compliance, and more. Mr. Hurler has also completed numerous insurance investigations related to hail, wind, fire, and freeze losses, snow load, moisture intrusion, and age-related deterioration.

Mr. Hurler has testified as an expert witness in premises liability cases.
