Field Investigation of Automotive Seat Belts

Olof H. Jacobson, M.S., P.E. | Richard M. Ziernicki, Ph.D., P.E.

Field investigation of seatbelt condition after an accident may provide answers to two fundamental questions; was the seatbelt in use during the accident, and did the seat belt function as intended by the designer?

Physical evidence on the belt, belt hardware, and vehicle interior is useful in evaluating the use and performance of seat belts. In addition to a discussion of inspection techniques, some common problems found in seat belt investigations are discussed.
