Family of Man Killed in Plant Conversion Settles for $4.7 Million

Richard M. Ziernicki, Ph.D., P.E., DFE served as the primary expert witness in a manufacturing accident case whereby a man died when he was struck by an overhead crane in a paper plant. During the conversion construction in the paper plant, this man performed pipefitting work but was unaware of other contractors operating the overhead crane in the same area. Dr. Ziernicki’s work focused on the proper maintenance and operation of the crane, as well as the duties and responsibilities of the different employers working on the project.

Dr. Ziernicki and the Knott Laboratory team used before/after photos, 3D laser scans and aerial drone footage to show the crane in operation and to provide a clear, visual account of what happened in this accident. The plaintiff used a jury focus group to test legal issues in this case. Knott Laboratory provided three-dimensional demonstrations and computer graphics that provided the members of the focus group with a complete and accurate visual account of the scene and how the accident happened.
